Greens welcome ACTU climate action

Australian Greens Deputy Leader and spokesperson on climate and energy, Adam Bandt MP, has welcomed the ACTU’s adoption at its National Congress of a strong platform for action on climate change.

Mr Bandt said the support for an Energy Transition Authority to oversee the shift away from coal to renewable energy, including supporting the transition for workers and communities, was particularly welcome and mirrored the Greens’ policy for a ‘Renew Australia’ authority.

“The ACTU’s call for strong climate action from government and its opposition to the current National Energy Guarantee, which will stall the transition to renewables, mark an important contribution to the climate change fight,” Mr Bandt said.

“The Greens support the ACTU’s call for an Energy Transition Authority, which mirrors our long-standing push for a Renew Australia authority. A well-resourced government body is critical to supporting workers and communities through the energy transition.”

“The ACTU platform shows that, despite the claims of the government coal huggers, there is no conflict between workers’ rights and strong action on climate change.”

“The Greens will continue to support the ACTU’s Change the Rules campaign and push for a jobs-rich transition to renewables.”
