The Australian Greens have welcomed Virgin Australia’s ban on plastic straws and stirrers.
“The less plastic waste we have finding its way into our waterways and environment, the better. This move by Virgin Australia should be congratulated,” Greens environment spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
“Virgin joins a growing list of companies and small businesses banning single-use plastic straws and this is a trend we would like to see continue.
“More and more small businesses are banning the straw and offering a more sustainable alternative – it would be great to see more big companies take this stand too.
“Plastic straws have a devastating impact on our natural environment. There is a long way to go to in phasing out single-use plastics, and corporate Australia has an important role to play.”
