Independent autopsy needed for Manus Island death

2017-08-08

An independent autopsy is needed into the death of of Hamed Shamshiripour on Manus Island, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

"It's important that people, including Hamed's fellow detainees, have confidence in the autopsy's findings," Senator McKim said.

"Hamed was Australia's prisoner, and it is the Australian government's responsibility to determine exactly how he died."

"Unfortunately, Hamed's death has shown how volatile and desperate the situation is in Australia's offshore detention centres."

"As the UNHCR has warned, the Australian government's actions are exacerbating the crisis on Manus Island."

"It is at a flashpoint. The only safe option is for the detention centres on Manus Island and Nauru to be evacuated and every man, woman and child brought to safety in Australia."
