The Liberal party’s unanimous motion to remove great white sharks from the protected species list so they can be slaughtered is ludicrous and should be ignored by the Environment Minister, Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert said today.
“This is an ignorant response. The Liberals have once again entered a fact free zone.
“White sharks are essential to a healthy marine eco system and slaughter of these creatures will not ensure safety of ocean users.
“We need to be implementing mitigation measures that increase safety for people that enter shark habitats, but they need to be evidenced to work and must be non-lethal.
“This shark killing debate has already been had by a host of scientists, academics, and the Australian community. We want and need healthy oceans whilst implementing strategies that reduce risk of a fatal incident.
“Josh Frydenberg should put his responsibilities as Environment Minister first and ignore this push if it passes the Liberal Party federal council next month.”
