Greens Leader Adam Bandt says Labor’s preference deal with the Liberals announced today risks handing a seat to the Liberals and brings Peter Dutton closer to the Lodge.
The Liberals will preference Labor in Macnamara and other Greens lower house seats across the country, and rather than preference the Greens and put the Liberals last as they have traditionally done, Labor will not preference the Greens in Macnamara.
The deal announced today comes after Peter Dutton repeatedly called on Anthony Albanese not to preference the Greens in Macnamara.
As Labor is likely to come third in Macnamara at the election, Labor voter preferences will decide the seat.
Quotes attributable to Greens Leader, Adam Bandt MP:
“This Labor-Liberal preference deal has just put Peter Dutton one step closer to the Lodge.
“Labor voters will be furious that they are helping Peter Dutton with preferences.
“Anthony Albanese has done what Peter Dutton wants, a dirty preference deal to try and keep the Greens from winning more seats at the election, but it won't work because voters aren’t stupid.
“The Greens can still win this seat when Labor voters reject this dirty preference deal with the Liberals.
“Only a vote for the Greens is a vote against Peter Dutton. The only way to keep Dutton out and get Labor to act is to vote Greens.”
