Live Export Backflip Will Hurt Animals

Australian Greens Animal Welfare spokesperson Senator Mehreen Faruqi has said that the federal government has done an extraordinary and devastating backflip on reducing stocking densities for cattle within the new Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock (ASEL). The new Standards are due to come into effect on 1 November.

Senator Faruqi said:

“This is a devastating intervention from a Minister who has prioritised live exporter profits over animal welfare.

“Reduced stocking densities are a basic way of making live export a tiny bit less inhumane. But the government won’t even allow for that.

“It’s seriously concerning how much power the exporters have over the Liberals and Nationals.

“Sometimes it seems like the exporters can get away with anything. The government will do their bidding every single time. They don’t give a toss about the welfare of animals,” she said.
