Manus settlement can’t compensate for Dutton’s harm

No amount of money can compensate for the harm that has been done and is still being done to Australia’s political prisoners on Manus Island, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

“This is the largest human rights settlement in Australian history, but it is a pittance compared to the horrors inflicted on these men by the Labor and Liberal parties,” Senator McKim said.

“They have suffered horrendously and lost years of their lives. No amount of money can ever compensate for that.”

“This settlement should end the political fiction that the prisons on Manus Island and Nauru are not Australia’s responsibility.”

“This is simply hush money to keep secret the horrors of offshore detention.”

“The only way we can start to deliver true justice is to close the detention centres on Manus Island and Nauru, bring the people there to freedom in Australia and try to help them repair some of the damage we have caused.”
