“Australia has never undertaken a serious national discussion that would enable us - and our governments - to acknowledge the history of what has happened and its contemporary consequences.
“This is a conversation we need to have - it’s long past time. It is about recognising the reality of our history and ensuring it is not ignored or airbrushed over.
“The telling of history is never set in stone, and nor should it be. We are constantly learning and reflecting upon our past, and the modern telling of history should reflect that. It’s not about rewriting history, it’s about presenting it accurately and being honest with ourselves about the injustices of the past.
“I agree with Dan Sultan’s comments on Q&A last night - the current date of Australia Day excludes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
“I’m proud of what Greens-led councils are doing to ensure our national day is one that all Australians can celebrate. These councils are making an important contribution to the #ChangeTheDate debate.
“The Greens stand with our First Nations people. We believe it’s time we change the date and negotiate a treaty. We need this conversation, we’ve always needed it.”
