With over 1 million out of work the Government should not be cutting JobSeeker payments

2020-08-13

The Greens say that the Government is failing the growing number of people out of work by cutting the Jobseeker payment at the end of September and failing to provide certainty to people looking for work.

It’s untenable that during a recession and a pandemic where we have high unemployment and underemployment that the Government is not offering people in our community some level of security and certainty about their future.

The Government must abandon its plans to cut the Jobseeker supplement by $300 at the end of September and show us their plan for Jobseeker going forward.

This is about people being able to pay their rent, mortgages, essential bills and putting food on the table.

There is no doubt that this uncertainty is causing distress and anxiety in our community and the Government needs to act quickly.
