Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young responds to calls from Labor backbenchers for climate considerations to be included in Australia's environment laws.
Quotes attributable to Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, Greens environment spokesperson:
“It beggars belief that in 2025, while Australian communities find themselves on the frontlines of climate fuelled disasters, polluting projects continue to be approved by the Government without any consideration of the climate crisis.
“So-called environment laws should protect our environment, not green light approvals for climate bombs like Woodside’s North West Shelf. Approving pollution on a huge scale out to 2070, destroying cultural heritage and threatening pristine ecosystems like Scott Reef is the exact opposite of environmental protection.
“The Greens want to work with the Labor Government for transformative environment laws that actually protect nature, not green-light its destruction.
“We call on the Prime Minister to listen to voices inside his own government calling for the urgent climate action we need by implementing a climate trigger.
“The Government has a choice - work with the Greens to insert a climate trigger and properly assess polluting projects for their impacts, or continue approving toxic coal and gas that sends our climate to collapse.”
