“It is truly bizarre to suggest that a journalist asking legitimate questions of a world leader has any impact on the relationship between our two countries. John Lyons is a well-respected and professional journalist, for Trump to attack him simply for doing his job in holding power to account is unacceptable.
“Trump is a bully, he thinks he can bully the press and he thinks he can bully Australia. It is time for Australia to forge a more independent path away from the US under Trump.
“Freedom of the press is a fundamental pillar of any functioning democracy and every day we are seeing new evidence that it is seriously under threat in Trump’s America.
