Private School Building Boom Exposes Public Funding Exorbitance

Australian Greens Senator for NSW and Education spokesperson Dr Mehreen Faruqi has said that a new analysis of planned NSW private school building projects exposes even further the exorbitance of $4.6 billion in public funding of private schools.

Senator Faruqi said:

“The Greens reject the bipartisan commitment to entrenching educational inequality. We must ditch the handouts for private schools and ensure public schools are put first every time.

“Private schools are planning new multi-million dollar projects including aquatic centres and sports complexes. Meanwhile, the Liberal government is hellbent on gifting them $4.6 billion more in public funding.

“Public schools should always be the priority for public funding, but all this government has is more money for their private school mates.

“This is all about power, prestige and politics, and nothing to do with meeting the educational needs of students.

“The latest $3.4 billion private school handout sailed through the lower house of parliament this week with complete Labor and Liberal support.

“The Greens oppose this cash bonanza for private schools. We are proud to be the party of public education.”
