The Senate has expressed support for charities and not-for-profit organisations in Australia, who are currently being targeted by the Federal Government who want to limit their advocacy.
“Charities and not-for-profits, whether they work on environmental issues, social services or human rights are under pressure by the Turnbull Government who want to limit their advocacy,” Australian Greens spokesperson on Family and Community Services Senator Rachel Siewert said today.
“Civil society is a key part of a strong and healthy democracy and advocacy is an essential part of the role of civil society.
“In trying to limit the advocacy of charities and not-for-profits, the Government is setting a dangerous precedent. The work of charities across the board in different areas should be congratulated, not restricted.
“I welcome the Senate acknowledgement and support of the hard work done by charities and not-for-profits whilst also noting the Government’s nasty attempt to limit that work”.
