Statement on Bill Shorten's Adani comments

Steph Hodgins-May, Greens Candidate for Macnamara

Bill Shorten's comments today about his backbenchers being irrelevant to the Labor Party’s decision-making process shows just how important it is to vote Greens if you want real action on climate change at this election, said Greens candidate for Macnamara, Steph Hodgins-May.

“The people of Macnamara want action on climate and to get that they need to vote Green,” she said.

“Now the people of this electorate know that when Labor candidate in Macnamara tells them that he’ll act from within the Labor Party to get action on climate change, we have the word of his boss how much that’s worth.”

“I call on Josh Burns to be clear with the voters on his position on the Adani mine and all new coal mines in Australia. Will he cross the floor and stand against the mine as the people of this electorate are calling for? Or will he stand with Bill Shorten and the Labor cabinet when they vote to back in this mine?”

“This election is about climate change. Almost every single voter that I talk to in this electorate has put climate change as one of their top 3 issues.

With just 477 votes separating the Greens and Labor, Macnamara is a very marginal seat and voters in this seat deserve to go to the polls with certainty about how each candidate will act on climate change.”
