The Australian Greens Disability Rights spokesperson Senator Jordon Steele-John said today's hearing for survivors of the Thalidomide disaster was an historic and long overdue opportunity for justice.
"Thalidomide was a man-made and entirely preventable disaster, perpetuated by a government who failed to not only protect people but to take appropriate and timely action to mitigate the drugs impacts in Australia," Steele-John said.
"Shockingly, what we've heard in today's hearing is that this government doesn't even know how many survivors there are still alive in Australia or the breadth of their needs. We are still failing these people and it is time to take not only take responsibility, but to act.
"Survivors and their families have experienced a life time of discrimination, bullying, ongoing health problems and even suicide.
"Today's hearing has strengthened the case for urgent government action to be taken to support Thalidomide survivors, acknowledge there have been decades worth of inaction and ensure their needs ongoing needs are met. The Australian Greens will continue to fight for the rights of this community."
