National Council Support for Trans and Gender Diverse Communities

2023-03-29

Recent public protests in Victoria have again highlighted the ongoing difficulties for our queer, trans and gender diverse communities in Australia. The actions on the steps of Parliament House were not only difficult to watch but listening to the keynote speakers equally dismaying.

We would like to reiterate that the Australian Greens strongly support our trans and gender diverse communities. Vulnerable groups are often leveraged for political outcomes and we continue to see this happen around the rights of trans and gender diverse people.

Trans rights are non-negotiable. This is one of our core values and our support for these communities will continue to be unwavering. Our policies and initiatives on these rights are settled. Members and supporters can see this policy on our website here; https://greens.org.au/policies/sexual-orientation-gender-identity-and-i….

Moreover, trans and gender diverse members are a vital part of our party. We are proud of the roles they have played in our internal structures and how they continue to shape the Australian Greens and its member bodies for the better. Our trans and gender diverse supporters are critical to our progressive movement, and we could not reach the level of success we have without this community and its engagement.

The Australian Greens will continue in our steadfast commitment to and campaigning for equality for trans and gender diverse people. We are proud of our policies in this regard, including funding for gender-affirming healthcare, making schools safer for trans and gender diverse young people, and tightening anti-discrimination laws. We are committed to calling out trans exclusionary rhetoric, which is hurtful and damaging, and making sure that all spaces are safe for trans and gender diverse people.

We are committed to continuous improvement of our relationship with these communities and listening to their needs over the changing political landscape in Australia. We will work with all member bodies to ensure that any actions that comprise or undermine this relationship can be dealt with quickly and in line with our values.

We are proud to stand up in the fight against hatred.
