Qld Greens statement on party sexual harassment and abuse policies

2018-11-13

The Queensland Greens would like to reaffirm that we will not tolerate sexual harassment or violence in any way, shape or form.

We have recently finalised an updated internal procedure: Sexual Harassment, Intimidation and Assault: Mandatory Reporting and Zero Tolerance along with amendments to our code of ethics and bylaws (available here).

Collectively, the Queensland Greens support survivors coming forward, and condemn any victimisation of people speaking out about sexual harassment, intimidation and assault.

Media coverage of the poor treatment of women in other Greens parties across the country has caused enormous concern to members, volunteers and supporters of the Queensland Greens.

The Queensland Greens Management Committee has sought legal advice on how to improve member and supporter safety while fulfilling the party’s legal obligations to provide natural justice. This advice has been applied in the development of the new procedure which has now been accepted and implemented by the Queensland Greens State Council.

An important amendment to the Queensland Greens Code of Ethics was made to introduce mandatory reporting of sexual assault, sexual harassment and bullying. This change supports the zero tolerance policy of the Queensland Greens for such behaviour and provides the required foundation upon which action can be taken to support victims, and when possible to prevent harm to our members and volunteers.
