The ACT Greens' Approach to Drug Decriminalisation:
The purpose of drug decriminalisation is to create a compassionate society that supports people who use drugs to access health services and support without fear. But the ACT Government's approach as it currently stands risks continuing to criminalise people living in poverty.
We're calling on the ACT Government to take a bolder approach to drug decriminalisation. 💚
Experts have told us that the ACT Government's proposed possession limits are not in line with the evidence to reduce drug harm.Retain the current, evidence-based personal possession thresholds by defining them as anything below the 2014 trafficable thresholds defined in the existing Criminal Code 2005 Regulation. Create an exemption for all adults to the charge of possession for all drugs, similar to the exemption in place for the possession of cannabis. This effectively decriminalises possession to enable access to health services without fear of criminal or financial penalty. |
