- Rehabilitation of Mining Sites
-
Too many mining sites across Australia are abandoned without proper rehabilitation, leaving damaged landscapes and harmed biodiversity in their wake.
The Greens are working to ensure that First Nations people have a central role in rehabilitation, recognising their cultural knowledge and connection to the land.
The Greens' plan:
- Ensure mining site rehabilitation includes First Nations consultation by pursuing legislative changes involving Traditional Owners.
- Support First Nations leadership by guaranteeing seats on relevant committees and awarding contracts to local First Nations businesses for rehabilitation and maintenance work.
- Restore biodiversity by using First Nations knowledge to replant native species, protect water sources, and heal ecosystems affected by mining
- Consultation with First Nations People
-
Mining projects often disregard First Nations people's wishes and cultural heritage, pushing ahead without proper consent or consultation.
The Greens are determined to reform this broken system by empowering First Nations communities to protect their land and heritage.
The Greens' plan:
- Legislate changes to onshore and offshore mining acts to mandate consultation with First Nations people before any project approval.
- Require free, prior, and informed consent from Traditional Owners, ensuring both tangible and intangible cultural heritage is identified and protected.
- Co-develop strategies with First Nations communities to avoid or minimise disruption to sacred sites, biodiversity, and water sources before any exploration, extraction, or processing begins.
- Ensure consultation methods are culturally appropriate and empower First Nations communities to safeguard their heritage and environment.
