Right now, the Prime Minister and Cabinet can decide to send Australians to war, without the agreement of Parliament. The majority of the Australian community want this to change.
STEP 1: Make a My Parliament Account
Before you can make a submission you will need to register for a My Parliament Account. You can do by clicking here. If you already have a My Parliament account you can skip to step 2.
STEP 2: Upload A Submission
To make a submission you can click here
You will be presented a list of bills you can make a submission. For the purpose of this campaign we are looking for Defence Amendment (Parliamentary Approval of Overseas Service) Bill 2020. Scroll down until you see this bill and click the bubble next to it and hit next.
Once you hit next you will be presented with the option to submit your submission as an organisation or personal. Hit personal and fill out any extra details needed.
After that you will have options around the confidentiality of your submission. The committee does sometimes let people do their submission confidentially but a reason must be given. Once you have chosen your preference hit next.
Now you can upload your submission. The Parliament's tips for writing a good submission are:
- clearly address some or all of the terms of reference—you do not need to address each one
- are relevant and highlight your own perspective
- are concise, generally no longer than four to five pages
- begin with a short introduction about yourself or the organisation you represent
- emphasise the key points so that they are clear
- outline not only what the issues are but how problems can be addressed, as the committee looks to submissions for ideas to make recommendations
- only include documents that directly relate to your key points
- only include information you would be happy to see published on the internet.
STEP 3: Submit!
When you have completed the above details you should be able to submit. If you are having issues with the My Parliament system you can email your submission to fadt.sen@aph.gov.au.
