Australia values democracy, fairness, and independence. The British monarchy no longer reflects who we are, or the future we want to build.
Unlike Labor, which has walked back its commitment to a republic, and the Coalition, which clings to the monarchy as a symbol of "stability," the Greens are pushing for change.
The Greens are working to deliver a democratic consultative process to ensure the public shapes the future of Australia as a republic.
Australia deserves a democratic head of state that reflects our values and independence, not inherited from a colonial monarchy. Becoming a republic is about taking pride in our identity, maturing as a nation, and standing on our own as a fully independent and democratic country.
Crucially, it involves addressing the historical injustices committed against First Nations peoples through truth-telling and treaties.
The Greens' plan:
- Establish a $10 million democratic consultative process, including citizen forums, juries, and assemblies, to determine Australia’s preferred republican model in the next term of government.
