Trade & Tourism

Australia’s trade and tourism industries have the potential to be more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient.

For too long, Labor and the Coalition have prioritised outdated approaches, leaving First Nations businesses and genuinely sustainable tourism ventures without the support they need to thrive.

The Greens are focused on building an economy that respects cultural heritage, promotes eco-friendly practices, and empowers local communities.

By prioritising First Nations leadership and sustainable development, the Greens will transform trade and tourism into drivers of fairness and environmental care.

With strategic investment and a clear vision, we can create a future where both industries reflect the values of respect, equity, and sustainability.

Supporting First Nations Trade

First Nations businesses have long been excluded from the benefits of international trade, with government support limited to narrow opportunities like art and fashion.

The Greens are working to ensure First Nations businesses are empowered to trade globally in a fair, sustainable, and culturally appropriate way.

The Greens' plan:

  • Establish a dedicated team within the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) to:
    • Help First Nations businesses navigate trade agreements and export opportunities.
    • Support export readiness by linking First Nations businesses to programs like Supply Nation’s Export Nation, providing mentoring and development resources.
    • Set investment targets and offer incentives for collaboration with First Nations businesses in export markets.
    • Develop intellectual property protections for First Nations products such as bushfoods, botanicals, medicines, art, and cultural artefacts.
    • Conduct research to build data and evidence for successful First Nations business export and import opportunities.

Supporting Tourism

Climate change and natural disasters have devastated Australia’s tourism industry, especially for small and family-run businesses.

The Greens are focused on supporting genuinely sustainable and First Nations-owned tourism ventures that preserve Australia’s unique ecosystems and cultural heritage.

The Greens' plan:

  • Establish a $15 million grant program to help small tourism businesses, First Nations operators, and sustainable eco-tourism ventures upgrade infrastructure and recover after natural disasters.
  • Prioritise funding for projects that expand accessibility, promote sustainability, and keep First Nations people working on country in culturally appropriate ways.
  • Adopt an intersectional approach to ensure funding reaches young people, women, First Nations communities, and small business owners.
